Website Modernization for UGO Networks
Motivation
UGO Networks needed to transition from outdated, table-based web layouts and Flash-driven interfaces to a modern, standards-compliant web architecture. The goal was to improve site performance, accessibility, and maintainability to better serve users and streamline internal development processes.
My Role & Contributions
As a Web Designer & Developer, I led a small development team in a major modernization effort. My contributions included:
- Leading a team of four developers in refactoring legacy HTML layouts into modern XHTML/CSS
- Improving page load times and cross-browser consistency through clean, standards-based code
- Replacing Flash-based interactive features with lightweight, accessible JavaScript components
- Authoring developer job descriptions and a detailed training manual for ongoing site updates and maintenance
- Implementing structured QA processes to ensure consistency and reduce errors during updates
Challenges
One of the biggest challenges was transitioning a high-traffic site without disrupting user experience. Replacing Flash with JavaScript required custom coding to preserve functionality while improving accessibility. Aligning the team with web standards and consistent practices was also critical for long-term maintainability.
Results & Success Metrics
The modernization project significantly enhanced site performance, decreased load times, and improved user experience across all major browsers. The refactored codebase reduced technical debt and enabled faster implementation of new features. The training manual and team onboarding materials I developed created a sustainable foundation for future development efforts.
This project showcased my ability to lead technical teams, implement modern best practices, and drive long-lasting improvements in web infrastructure and team workflows.
